Monarda punctata is an upright herbaceous perennial with a wide native range that covers much of the United States and into Mexico and Canada. This easy-to-grow plant thrives in sandy, rocky, well-drained soils and can tolerate dry conditions. A valuable addition to the outdoor herb or butterfly garden, it can be grown in full sun to partial shade. This beautiful wildflower has special value for all types of generalist and specialty bees, moths, and other beneficial insects that can help with pollination of the rest of your vegetable garden. It is the host plant for several caterpillars including Gray Marvel, Snout Mouths, Hermit Sphinx, and Orange Mint moths. The Karner Blue butterfly and Ruby-throated hummingbird use Spotted Bee Balm as a favorite nectar source.
