The Rattlesnake Bean, or Preacher Bean, (Phaseolus vulgaris), is a vigorous, high-yielding pole bean that has a long history in American Indian tribes, being cultivated by Hopi, Iroquois, and Cherokee people. This heirloom plant produces tall vines that can reach up to 10 feet. The distinctive pods are green with purple stripes. When dried, the white beans can rattle inside, which may be the origin of the plant name. Rattlesnake beans are quite versatile and can be canned, frozen or saved as a dry bean, making them an excellent addition to your emergency long term food supply.
